"SEO dataset" can mean several different things, which is why searches for it often end in frustration. Before you download anything, it helps to know which kind of data your task needs.
The main types of SEO dataset
- Keyword data: search terms with metrics such as volume and difficulty. Usually from a keyword tool.
- Your own performance data: clicks, impressions and positions from Google Search Console, and visits from your analytics tool.
- Crawl data: titles, status codes and links gathered from a site by a crawler.
- Entity data: lists of places, products, categories or tools. This is the data used to build programmatic pages.
Where to find them
- Google Search Console is the best free source for your own site, because it shows real searches and pages. It can export directly, or send data to BigQuery.
- Google Keyword Planner gives keyword ideas and volume ranges with a Google Ads account.
- Government and open data portals, such as data.gov, publish statistics and location data, often under open licenses.
- Wikidata offers structured data on places, organizations and other entities.
- Dataset libraries offer ready-made starting points, including our free datasets for programmatic pages. These do not include live search volume.
How to check a dataset before you use it
- Source: can you tell where the data came from?
- License: are you allowed to publish it or use it commercially, and do you need to credit the source?
- Freshness: when was it last updated? Business listings and prices go stale quickly.
- Completeness: count the empty fields. A column that is mostly blank cannot support a page section.
- Accuracy: check a random sample of at least 20 rows by hand.
- Usefulness: does each row add something a reader could not get from the row next to it?
Using a dataset for programmatic pages
A dataset becomes valuable when each row can produce a page that really helps someone. A list of city names alone will not do that: swapping a place name into the same text produces thin pages. Add fields that make each page different, such as local prices, availability or real comparisons.
Start with a small batch. Publish a few pages, check that they get indexed, and look at how people use them before you scale. Our free programmatic SEO course covers this process step by step.
Using a dataset for research
For research, start with your own Search Console export. Group the terms using a keyword grouper, then look for topics with impressions but few clicks. Those are often the pages closest to bringing in traffic.
